Three Cultural Taboos that Prevent Caregivers from Developing Skills of Self-Care

Presented at the Physician Wellness and Financial Literacy Conference (Feb-22) in Phoenix, Arizona.

Caregivers are culturally taught to be invincible, therefore they don't ask for help. There are 3 cultural taboos that prevent them from seeking self-care. They are:

  1. Being culturally conditioned not to trust oneself, family, or teammates
  2. A fear of reaching out to someone who will listen to your story
  3. Inability to express emotions or feelings.

Caregivers experience normal reactions to traumatic events. These resistances lead to compassion fatigue and burnout.
